Should I apply this year?

The exact starting date varies from centre to centre but all courses start between early September and mid-October 2025 and have only one intake per academic year.

Can I apply in my final year?

Degree results needed by the end of January 2025

Very few people who do not have GBC when they apply are successful e.g. only 2 people have been accepted to NHS places nationally in the last 5 years.

People completing GBC-accredited courses in spring/summer 2025

Will you complete your psychology degree or your conversion course in spring/summer 2025? You will not have Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) when applications are released to course centres by the end of January 2025.

Some courses consider people who do not have GBC when they apply, but most do not.

If the courses you are interested in accept applications from people who do not have GBC yet, you must ensure that you will have GBC in place before the courses start. In practice, you must have completed your qualification and got your results by the end of August 2025.

If you decide to apply you will not be able to upload a GBC document as you will not have GBC. Either you will not be asked for a GBC document or you may need to tick the relevant "Provide later" box on the Documents screen to complete that screen.

Deferred entry, Work experience, Other degrees

Deferred entry

There is no system of deferred entry. If you already know that you cannot start in autumn 2025, please do not apply.

Course centres may sometimes allow deferred entry in unforeseen circumstances but this is not the norm.

Work experience

Some courses require a minimum length of time for relevant experience (e.g. 12 months) for your Application to be considered.

Other degrees

Universities will not usually let you enrol on a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology if you are already enrolled on another degree, e.g. a PhD or Masters programme.

If you have any outstanding requirements from another programme when the clinical course starts, you may have to withdraw from that programme to be able to start or continue your Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

Have you already done NHS-funded training?

You may not be able to apply this year

If you have already received NHS funding for training in the psychological professions you may need to wait before you can apply for clinical psychology training.

See the Funding page for details of the requirements in each nation of the UK.
